The Deepest Gratitude From My Addled Brain

Oh, man.

Johnny Yen has cured my mystery song woes. I knew 1-3 already, but 4 was given to me by Mister Yen.

Here's song excerpts from all the mystery songs from my last post.

Mystery Song #1
The Rock-A-Teens - Woo Hoo
The 5678's played a cover of this in Kill Bill Vol. 1, but this version is still by far the best.

Mystery Song #2
Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers - Little Bitty Pretty One
This one of my favorite songs from the 50's. Frankie Lymon did a couple other nice songs -- "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" and another personal favorite of mine, "I'm Not A Juvenile Delinquent".

Mystery Song #3
Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
PEEEYYYYW! PEEEEYYYYW! PEEEEEEEYYWWW!

Mystery Song #4
Clarence "Frogman" Henry - Ain't Got No Home
Ahhh, finally I have a song to replace the fragment in my head. Apparently this song was in the movie Casino, which annoys me, 'cause I own it, and one would think this damn song would have popped out at me. Ah well. Thanks again, Mr. Yen.

You're welcome!

I love Casino-- I'm apparently one of the three people on the planet who actually liked it better than Goodfellas. I found the "Lefty Rosenthal" character ("Ace" Rothstein in the movie) really fascinating.

BTW, if you buy the special edition of Casino, it includes the Nick Pileggi "True Crime Authors" segment from the History Channel on Lefty Rosenthal and Anthony "Ant" Spilotro.

A recommended read: "Enforcer," former FBI guy's William Roemer's book on Spilotro. While Roemer had begruding respect for many of the mafia guys, who had some code of honor (they left families alone, for instance), he hated Spilotro, who once killed a guy in front of his own family.

Casino has an amazing soundtrack. One obscure one from it: Eddie Harris and Les McCann's "What's What," an old favorite of mine.

I thought Ace Rothstein's outfits had more personality than most actors in other movies. I didn't like Casino when I first saw it, but I absolutely love it now.

I *think* I have the special edition of Casino. I'll check it out tonight.

I'll also check out the book. Sounds interesting. I haven't read a lot of non-fiction crime books, but what I have read I have found fascinating.

I'll see if I can get a hold of that Les McCann - Eddie Harris track. Just last night, my "friend" recently downloaded a whole bunch of Les McCann. He is an artist I don't know that much about, but am trying to hear more of.

I'm only familiar with McCann's "Bucket of Grease" which is fantastic. I have "Swiss Movement" but haven't listened to it yet.

My, I have a lot of homework :)

I think "What's What" is on Swiss Movement. WXRT used to play the song a lot back in the day.

Speaking of WXRT, did you know that Johnny Mars is back, filling in shifts?

I'll check it out, then!

I didn't know Johnny Mars was back. Pretty cool!

JY, maybe you are thinking of "Compared To What"?

That's on Swiss Movement, and it actually popped up a week or two in my iPod shuffle.

Good tune.
