Announcing A Short, Sweet Monkey Mix
Oh, golly.
We have gone a little crazy in recent volumes of the Green Monkey Music Project.
Can't Wait For Halloween had a whopping ten participants and fifty songs, while Geography Pop Quiz had nine participants with over sixty songs.
For this, Volume 9, we're going to have a mix with only six participants, and less than thirty songs.
Here's how it works. This mix will be called ABC.
Each participant will have letters of the alphabet assigned to them. The only requirement on the participants is that they must provide a song for each letter they are responsible for. The first word in the song must begin with that letter. For example, if you are responsible for the letter "W", the song "Waiting On A Friend" would be valid, but "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" would *not* be valid.
Okay, so how does a participant sign up for a group of letters? Well, you pick one of the shapes to the left. I have already randomly assigned letters to the shapes. If a shape has already been picked by someone else, you can't pick it.
I won't tell you which letters belong to which shapes, but I will tell you how the letters are broken down:
A-E
F-O
P-T
U-Y
Z
Yes, there will be one participant that has one only letter they will be responsible for -- Z!
This mix has five open slots. Each participant has to pick a shape when they sign up for the mix. I'll be taking the sixth slot. I will take whatever shape is left after the five participants have chosen theirs.
I'll publish the key tying shapes to letters after we get a full number of participants on the mix (if you want to know what letters you got before the mix fills up, I can email the shape/letter key to you).
This mix has everything! The thrill of chance! The magic of the alphabet! And it's not that long!
So, sign up, already!
UPDATE!
We have our participants!
Beth! (Pink parallelogram)
J.D.! (Blue Circle)
Barbara! (Green Triangle)
Tim! (Orange Star)
Dr Monkey Von Monkerstein! (Red Square)
Splotchy! (Yellow Oval)
Participants, here are your letters! Since übermixologist Beth got short-changed on the number of selections, I said she could still do five songs, provided they all start with the letter "Z" (don't worry, she will have *no* problem coming up with the songs).
Just post your song selections as a comment on this post.

I'll take the pink slanted rectangle for $500, Alex!
I'll have a Participation Sundae, with a small Diet Blue Circle, please.
Please please please may I have the strongest shape known to man -
the triangle. Thank you, thank you very much.
I'll take the star!
Me. me me. I want in.
I'll take the red square.
Lucky ol' me snared the Z. I bitched and moaned ... but came up with 11 Z-tunes in a matter of minutes. I didn't want to take the easy way out with "Ziggy Stardust" (not even the Bauhaus or Wilco covers), so I narrowed it down to five Zs — with a bonus track:
R.E.M. (natch): Zither
Brooklyn Funk Essential: Zurna Preserve
Guided by Voices: Zap
Stan Getz feat. Astrud Gilberto: Zazueira
Young Marble Giants: Zebra Trucks
BONUS: Louis Armstrong: Zip-a-dee-doo-dah
Beth, even if this weren't your third monkey mix, I would have no problem calling you a Green Monkey Master.
Thank you, Sir Splotch. I take that compliment highly.
Here are my selections!
Papa M - "Up North Kids"
Pixies - "Velouria"
Tones on Tail - "War"
Mouse on Mars - "X-Flies"
The Who - "Young Man Blues"
I'll get "Young Man Blues" to you. I want to make a custom mp3 of it by trimming off the last minute, which is all irrelevant concert talk.
You're going to have to start raffling off slots Splotchy!
Here's my choices:
"Passionate Fight"-Ute Lemper
"Quit Hollerin' At Me"-John Prine
"Respectable"-The Rolling Stones
"Senior Service"-Elvis Costello and the Attractions
"The Rose of England"-Nick Lowe
By the way, congrats on your 500th post!
Damnit, I missed another one! This is what I get for taking blog breaks.
¡Mis selecciones, capitán!
"Amazing Grace" by Hayley Westenra
"Beep" by the Pussycat Dolls feat. Will.I.Am
"Cloud Nine" by Evanescence
"Disenchanted" by My Chemical Romance
"Everything" by Fefe Dobson
Holy hell, I'm young. It's not even funny. Kinda sad, really. Hm.
Okey dokey, here be mine:
Fee Fie - the Hidden Cameras
Go to Sleep - Radiohead
Hyper-ballad - Bjork
I Fought in a War - Belle and Sebastian
Just One More - John-Rae and the River
Man, this was harder than I thought it would be.
I had to omit a lot of songs I love. I'm sorry, Curtis Mayfield! I'm sorry, Joy Division!
Here's my choices. Some nice popular ones, interspersed with some relatively obscure favorites.
King's Lead Hat - Brian Eno
Love Action (I Believe In Love) - Human League
Midnight - Kramer
Nighttime - Big Star
Oblivious - Galaxie 500
dale, you're right! I should raffle 'em off. I do so love the cruel randomness of fate.
tim, thanks for the congrats! It's amazing I have been able to say so many things about stupid stuff nobody cares about.
idear, sorry you missed out. If it makes you feel any better, I'm not really on any kind of regular schedule with these mixes, so it would be difficult to predict when the green monkey what lives in my brain starts another mix.
