New Green Monkey Mix!

Hi kids.

Wow, I took a look at the last time I did an installment of the Green Monkey Music Project. It was well over a year ago! Holy disregarded blog, Batman!

I was talking with my Twitter buddy Denise. She found out about the mixes and she dug them, and really wanted to participate in one. She actually suggested a theme that for some reason I never got around to. It was a good enough idea that I decided to get the green monkey out of his bunker and ask him to start up the Mixtape Machine.

Volume 21 of the Green Monkey Music Project will be Stop Crying And Listen.

This mix consists of songs you want to have played at your funeral (Morbidity Alert!). This might sound like a depressing topic for a mix, but I totally disagree. I have always felt that mixtapes are some form of creativity and communication. One can use them to affect the emotional state of the listener, and to transmit some sort of spiritual essence by the sheer choice and ordering of a few songs. I believe this!

So, having a few songs played at your funeral is like a final way of saying goodbye, fuck you, I love you, whatever you want to say. It's your last chance of pushing your imagination and thoughts on the world -- it's your last hurrah.

I'm opening the mix to 8 participants. Denise and I are participating, so that leaves 6 open slots. Please comment on this blog post if you are interested in participating.

All that's required for your participation is simply selecting songs for your mix, and letting me know what they are. For now, all you have to do is say you would like to join in. We'll get to the song selection soon enough.

Thanks, and happy mixing.

Splotchy's Contribution To The Food & Drink Mix

Here's a discussion of my selections for Food & Drink, Volume 20 of the Green Monkey Music Project.

Bucket of Grease - Les McCann
Okay, so I start out with a song that is stretching the mix's theme, I know (unless you routinely sit down and ingest a large container of grease). In my defense, look at the album cover. They are standing in front of a fast food joint. So, "Bucket of Grease" CLEARLY refers to food, yes? I think the album cover pic might be of a place on Maxwell Street in Chicago. I think I might have eaten there, actually. This song has a great start -- a 1-2-3-4 count-off that leads into a killer piano riff. It's a great way to start a mix.

Lady Marmalade - Labelle
You might be more familiar with this song as "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi (ce soir)". A great, funky song. It holds up after repeated listenings.

Hold All The Butter - The Bats
A nice, cheery song from the New Zealand band The Bats. Maybe a little too cheery. DEAL WITH IT.

Have A Cuppa Tea - Kinks
A nice little slice of homespun British pop. From the record Muswell Hillbillies.

You Left The Water Running - Wilson Pickett
Wilson Pickett is awesome. He has one of the best voices ever.

Hooch - The Melvins
Not sure if this works in the mix. It might be too jarring a transition from Wilson Pickett. I had thought about replacing the previous song with "Tropical Hot Dog Night" by Captain Beefheart, but... I didn't. I have no idea what this song is supposed to be about. I don't think I am supposed to know.

Champagne and Misery - The Clean
Some more New Zealand pop, this time from one of my favorite bands, The Clean. The word "Misery" is in the song title, so I hope it reduces some of the cheeriness of "Hold All The Butter" for you, Dr. Gloomypants.

Potato Chips - Slim Gaillard
I first became aware of Slim Gaillard through Jack Kerouac's book On The Road. His music has a nice, playful silliness. And he loves potato chips!

Gimme That Old Time Music

I don't want to give anyone whiplash, but since the last volume of the Green Monkey Music Project, The Unheard Monkey, focused on music that was released 2005 and later, I thought it would be interesting to make Volume 19 of GMMP focus on older music.

Much older music. I would like to only use recordings that are pre-1950. If you have a newer recording of an old song that you would like to include, we can always negotiate, I suppose.

There will be a total of seven participants (six open slots), each of which can select up to six songs.

Sign up for the mix by leaving a comment.

UPDATE:

Participants:

Some Guy
Bubs
SamuraiFrog
Chef Cthulhu
Domboy
Splotchy
Splotchy's Dad

If Domboy wants to join in, he is certainly welcome (he had expressed interest in an earlier post of mine).

Yes, my dad is joining in on this mix. He is an avid collector of jazz 78's, and he has agreed to contribute some magical selections this time around.

Splotchy's Contribution To The Unheard Monkey Mix

Here's a discussion of my selections for The Unheard Monkey, Volume 18 of the Green Monkey Music Project.

When Allen first told me the idea for his guest-hosted mix, I'll admit I panicked a bit.

I have not been listening to much new music. I used to love going to my neighborhood record store and browse the used bins, just picking stuff up on a whim. I found a lot of good new music that way.

But, when my twins were born in 2003, my musical tastes stagnated. I didn't go to the record store any more, didn't listen to much music, etc.

My musical tastes got rejuvenated with my membership to the late Oink's Pink Palace, and I started exploring lots of different music. Except, this time around, instead of listening to a lot of new music, I tried out music from the past -- genres like Tropicália, soul, disco funk, that stuff. Hey, did you know that Wilson Pickett is SUPER AWESOME? It's true.

So, Oink went away and my musical tastes once again stagnated. This is actually a pattern I have noticed in my music-listening habits.

Anyways, I saw Allen's mix as a challenge to familiarize myself with a lot of the new music you crazy kids have been listening to. Since I didn't have a lot of time to ferret out music that I liked, I pretty much used the annual Best-Of lists that the popular music site Pitchfork puts out.

Some of the selections here I was already familiar with, and some I just listened to for the mix.

Some artists that didn't make the mix that I did listen to:

Fleet Foxes
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
The Mai Shi
Santogold
The Blow
The Knife
MGMT
Panda Bear
The Mountain Goats
Feist
Cut Copy
Hercules and Love Affair
Vivian Girls
Okkervil River
Cymbals Eat Guitars
Viktor Vaughn

(phew!)

Here are the selections that made it---

Solid Gold - Eagles Of Death Metal
So, this artist is not new to Allen. I actually first heard of these guys through the song "Cherry Cola", a selection of his for the ROYGBIV mix. I could see how someone might be annoyed at this song, with its constant refrain of "Sweat!", but I think this is just pure fun rock 'n roll. I smile every time I hear it.

Golden Age - TV On The Radio
I actually saw TV On The Radio do this song on SNL. I was blown away. This is a great song off a great album. TV On The Radio is the current band on my Who's In Charge Here blog, and it's not a mistake I put their musical genre as "Delicious".

Fucking Boyfriend - The Bird And The Bee
MizSplotchy actually turned me onto this group. It's nice and mellow, kinda Europopish.

Trance Manual - John Vanderslice
My friend Andy is a big John Vanderslice fan. He's 6'4". Sorry, I can't help myself with that stupid joke, but Andy is tall. He does like Vanderslice a lot. I went with Andy to a concert at the Portage Theater in Chicago, where Vanderslice was opening up for The Mountain Goats. I was not familiar with either artist before I went.

They were on their "Gone Primitive" tour, which basically meant it was Vanderslice and John Darnielle (the main guy behind the Goats) playing acoustic guitars without any band accompaniment.

I remember liking the song "Trance Manual" a lot. It was kind of weird hearing the song for the first time in a manner that was different from its recording, which I listened to later. Okay, maybe it wasn't that weird after all.

The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
This was totally something I just listened to because I found a review of it on Pitchfork. The singer has a little David Byrne wavery quality to his voice. Though the song isn't as "Delicious" as TV On The Radio, it's still pretty damned good. From what I could tell, there might have been a little backlash to CYHSY's first album -- first people say it's great, and then other people say uh-uh it's not that great, and then those first people say well it's pretty good, to which the other people say, yeah I'll give you that one. I agree with the final assessment -- pretty good.

Good Days Bad Days - Kaiser Chiefs
Hey, this is a band I knew about before the mix! I listened to their previous album Employment. I think I did this because I wanted to hear some of the bands that were playing the Pitchfork Festival in 2006 I attended, though now I'm not sure if KC played there. Either way, I knew about them, dammit.

I could have picked the very energetic "Never Miss A Beat" or "Can't Say What I Mean" but I thought I'd end the mix on the happy, almost marchable "Good Days Bad Days".

Thanks to Allen for shocking my musical tastes into the 21st Century!

A Question For GMMP Interested Parties

Hiya.

The Unheard Monkey will probably be published Wednesday or Thursday, and consists of new musicks (2005 and later) selected by some heavy-hitter musically-minded participants.

I was thinking it might be nice to go the other way for the mix after Unheard, wherein the only rule is that all the selections are recorded pre-1950.

However, I don't know that I can find people to do this mix -- I'm not sure if people have 5 or 6 older songs they would be able to select.

If there are people that are able and willing to do the mix, then great. If not, I'll pick another theme (I have a couple in mind). I was hoping to find at least four other people. Leave a comment indicating you're interested if this sounds fun to you.

Splotchy's Contribution To The COVER ME! Mix

Here's a discussion of my selections for the COVER ME! Mix, Volume 17 of the Green Monkey Music Project.

Contact - Godzuki
Contact - Brigitte Bardot
I heard the Godzuki cover of this before hearing the original by Bardot. Both are neat in their own way. Bardot's original is really peppy and short. And, she sings in French. That's always nice.

I really like Godzuki's cover. It's kind of electronically chunky, for lack of a better word. I think they have a drum machine patched through a Crybaby (aka "Wah-Wah") pedal which gives the whole song a really nice funky underpinning. This song can be found on the wonderful compilation Pop Romantique, which consists of well-established "alt" bands (Luna, Magnetic Fields, Ivy, Air) covering French tunes.

The Tide Is High - Blondie
The Tide Is High - The Paragons
This is another case of me hearing the cover before hearing the original. In fact, I didn't even realize it was a cover until a few years ago.

I used to go every Tuesday to Rock Records in downtown Chicago (you could get a dollar off all albums on Tuesdays). I would usually just go through their cutout bin of $5 items, looking for a good deal. One of those Tuesdays I lucked upon Duke Reid's Treasure Chest, a fantastic 2-disc compilation of rocksteady music. When I got home, I put on the first disc without looking at the tracks, and was very surprised to hear the Paragons launch into "The Tide Is High".

Even though it's a cover, for me the definitive version of this song will always belong to Blondie. Oh, this song. It would fit nicely as one of my selections on the Total Absorption Mix, as when I hear it I have to listen to the whole damn thing. It would fit nicely on the Eargasm Mix as well -- at the 3:48 mark, the way Deborah Harry sings the "the tide is hiiiIIGH!" gets me every time.

You may have noticed that I included an image of the K-Tel album Full Tilt as opposed to the Blondie album that the song was originally on, Autoamerican.

Well, that K-Tel record was a huge part of my childhood existence. I didn't own it, but a good friend of mine did. And we played the crap out of that album. Here's the track listing:

FULL TILT: 1981
A1 The Tide Is High (Blondie)
A2 Let My Love Open The Door (Pete Townshend)
A3 Whip It (Devo)
A4 Hot Rod Hearts (Robbie Dupree)
A5 Take Your Time (Do It Right) (S.O.S. Band)
A6 I'm Happy That Love Has Found You (Jimmy Hall)
A7 Who'll Be The Fool Tonight (Larsen-Feiten Band)

B1 He's So Shy (Pointer Sisters)
B2 You're The Only Woman (Ambrosia)
B3 Shining Star (Manhattans)
B4 Midnight Rocks (Al Stewart)
B5 Misunderstanding (Genesis)
B6 Aint' That A Shame (Cheap Trick)
B7 Hit Me With Your Best Shot (Pat Benatar)

Honestly, I remember listening to the Pete Townshend, Devo and Blondie more than anything. And I remember playing "Whip It" at the wrong speed. It actually sounds quite lovely sped up. But I would never do that to Blondie. No, no, no.

Speeding Motorcycle - Yo La Tengo
Speeding Motorcycle - Daniel Johnston
I remember friends of mine in college talking about this song. One was defending it, and one was mocking Daniel Johnston. I like this song. The original is a little jarring when you first hear it, but it's sincere. And Yo La Tengo does a really pretty cover of it.

I thought about including R.E.M.'s cover of the Syd Barrett song "Dark Globe", which I think has a similar relationship to this cover/original pair.

Oh, there's another nice cover of this song by Yo La Tengo on Genius + Love, where Daniel Johnston calls in to sings the vocals, with YLT providing the musical accompaniment.

Superstar In France - Lambchop
Superstar In France - East River Pipe
I first discovered Lambchop during one of my many sessions of browsing used CD's at Laurie's Planet Of Sound. I really dug the album I picked up, Thriller. One of the best tracks on the record was "Superstar In France", which was actually a cover of a song by F.M. Cornog (aka East River Pipe).

They actually do a couple covers of East River Pipe songs on this album, but this is my favorite.

I bought some albums by East River Pipe because I liked the Lambchop covers so much.

Though the original "Superstar In France" is quite lovely, I love the Lambchop version a bit more. The instrumentation is wonderful, and Lambchop singer Kurt Wagner has one of the best voices in pop music.

Crazy - Violent Femmes
Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
Okay, the original song, from Gnarls Barkley's debut album St. Elsewhere, is great. You'll get no argument from me.

On the same record, Gnarls Barkley does a cover of "Gone Daddy Gone", a song from the Violent Femmes' debut album. I'm not sure if that was a motivating factor for the Violent Femmes to cover "Crazy", but whatever got them to do it, I'm thankful.

If they haven't already done so, they should cover the respective "Crazy" songs by Patsy Cline and Pylon. If there is any song out there called "Crazy", I want to hear Gordon Gano singing it.

American Woman - Butthole Surfers
American Woman - The Guess Who
I honestly don't know if I ever have heard the original in its entirety prior to this mix. I mostly know it from the "Freedom Rock" commercial, or whatever-the-hell compilation it used to be on that would be incessantly advertised on the T.V.

I have heard the Butthole Surfers cover plenty, however. I don't know, it has traces of the original, but stands alone as its own song quite nicely. It's a little squonky. I just like it.

COVER ME!

I know the Green Monkey music pipe is still sore from all the filth pumped through it for The Lenten Mix, but I wanted to get this new mix started because I am very excited about it.

Volume 17 of the Green Monkey Music Project is called COVER ME!, and if you guessed that this mix concerned covers, well, aren't you Mr./Ms. Smartypants.

Your selections should all be songs which are not the original versions, but are rather another artist's interpretation of the original. I want the cover of the song to be meaningful, or important, or special to you in some way that distinguishes it from the original, and I'm going to want you to explain the significance when you discuss your selections after the mix has been published.

There are five open slots for this mix. Each participant can pick six songs.

When you eventually submit your songs, please provide the song name, the artist performing the cover, as well as the artist of the original song.

I'm actually going to have a little fun with this mix, in that there will be two mixes -- the first "disc" will be the cover versions, and the second will contain the original versions of all the covers.

Oh, one more rule that I am going to have to enforce. You can't use Leonard Cohen's song Hallelujah, as I'm just tired of hearing it.

Sign up for the mix by leaving a comment, kiddos.

Here are my choices:

Contact - Godzuki (Brigitte Bardot)
The Tide Is High - Blondie (The Paragons)
Speeding Motorcycle - Yo La Tengo (Daniel Johnston)
Superstar In France - Lambchop (East River Pipe)
Crazy - Violent Femmes (Gnarls Barkley)
American Woman - Butthole Surfers (The Guess Who)

UPDATE!

We have our participants!

Randal G!
Dr MVM!
p0nk!
Andy!
Bill T!
Splotchy!

Welcome aboard!

When you decide on your selections, please leave them as a comment on this post in a format similar to mine.

Splotchy's Contribution To The Lenten Mix

Here's a discussion of my selections for the Lenten Mix, Volume 16 of the Green Monkey Music Project.

Jailbait - Motörhead
Hey baby you're a sweet young thing,
Still tied to Mommy's apron strings,
I don't even dare to ask your age,
It's enough to know you're here backstage,
You're Jailbait, and I just can't wait,
Jailbait baby come on

Carbona Not Glue - The Ramones
Wondering what I'm doing tonight
I've been in the closet and feel all right
Ran out of Carbona
Mom threw out the glue
Ran out of paint and roach spray too

It's TV's fault why I am this way
Mom and pop wanna put me away
From the early morning movie
To the late late show
After it's over nowhere to go

And I'm not sorry for the things I do
My brain is stuck from shooting glue
I'm not sorry for the things I do

She's Like Heroin To Me - The Gun Club
Don't let her take her love to town
They will never fill her heart
She needs a passion like her father's used to be

I know, because I'm like the train shooting down the mainline
I know, because I'm like the Indian wind along the telegraph lines

And she's like Heroin to me
She's like Heroin to me
She's like Heroin to me
She cannot miss a vein

So mainline it!

The Power Of Positive Drinking - Lou Reed
Some people say, alcohol makes you less lucid
And I think that's true if you're kind of stupid
I'm not that kind that gets himself burned twice

And some say liquor kills the cells in your head
And for that matter so does getting out of bed
When I exit, I'll go out gracefully, shot in my hand

The pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive drinking
The pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive
The pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive
The pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive
The pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive drinking

December 1963 (Oh What A Night) - Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons
Oh, what a night
You know, I didn't even know her name
But I was never gonna be the same
What a lady, what a night

Oh, I, I got a funny feeling when she walked
In the room and I,
As I recall it ended much too soon

Oh, what a night
Hypnotizing, mesmerizing me
She was everything I dreamed she'd be
Sweet surrender, what a night!

Oh, what a night
Why'd it take so long to see the light?
Seemed so wrong, but now it seems so right
Sweet surrender, what a night!
