Hi!
Here's a quiz I have created, mostly for the fact that I recently had the happy discovery that I can make little subscripts with the tag.
So, please answer with the chemical name, as well its common role or usage (include its "street" name, if one exists).
Example:
NaCl would be sodium chloride, more popularly known as salt, which is used to make things more savory and happy.
1. CO
2. CO2
3. MgOH
4. N2O
5. H2O
6. H2O2
7. FeS2
8. NaHCO3
9. KC4H4O6
10. C12H22O11
5 comments:
1. Carbon monoxide, which is in your car exhaust and used for slow suicide. And I guess other stuff.
2. Carbon dioxide. Plants live on it, we exhale it as part of the respiratory process.
5. Dihydrogen monoxide, simple water, the staff of life and so on and so forth. Good for drinking. Humans are mostly water, but I wouldn't try to drink a person.
6. Dihydrogen peroxide. Peroxide is used to make smart girls dumber through blondening. Also a disinfectant.
7. Iron persulfide. I only know this because it's iron pyrite, which is Fool's Gold, which is awesome. I have a bit of this, I just think it's neat.
8. Sodium bicarbonate, not only baking soda, but the active ingredient for antacids, which help cure the heartburn I get from indulging in too many fried foods.
Nicely done!
I must admit that I don't know #9 and #10 by heart. I was just hunting for everyday things in order to round my list to 10.
Long live fool's gold! Now I haveta post a music video.
#4 is Nitrous oxide. I don't think it has an advanced usage... is there one?
Nicely done, J.D.!
Nitrous oxide supplies the RDA of both nitrogen and oxygen. It's doubly nutritious!
Here's the rest of the answers, for those of you playing at home.
3. Magnesium Hydroxide, also known as milk of magnesium. It helps with the passing of waste matters.
9. Potassium bitartrate, also known as cream of tartar. It's a cleaning agent. No affiliation with tartar sauce. Don't put it on fish, unless you want to take an unpleasant trip to the hospital and/or morgue.
10. Sucrose, also known as good ol' sugar. Unlike #9, this tastes pretty good.
