Green Monkey Mix Volume 7 Accepting Participant(s)

Even though I can't wait for Halloween, I'd like to kick off Volume 7 of the Green Monkey Music Project.

We're going to dial down the insanity from Volume 6 and only have five participants for this mix, so that's four open slots for all you bloggers.

Tenacious S had expressed an interest in participating in a future mix. Ten S, the future is now. You can have a slot if you want it (claim it in the comments section of this post).

I mentioned this mix to Johnny Yen, who I believe is interested in participating this time around. That's another slot eaten up.

I also tapped my buddy Tim to play along. That's yet another slot if he is up to the challenge.

Assuming everyone I'm holding a spot for ends up participating, that still leaves one open slot for a lucky participant.

Okay, what are we doing in this mix volume?

This mix will be called Speed It Up.

The rules to this mix are tied to the speed of the songs. Each participant will provide from five to eight songs. Each song in your minimix has to be faster than the last. Your first song can be as slow as you want. Your fast song can be as fast as you want. I just ask that each song in your minimix is faster than its predecessor.

Just to be clear, the speed of your songs is not related to any of the other participants' selections. Your mix is self-contained (Slowest song ---> Fastest song).

Okay, let's go!

We have our participants!

Johnny Yen!
Tenacious S!

Thanks to everyone for signing on!

Wow, the rules for this one made my head spin. I'm in on the next one okay?

I'm so glad you tapped tenS for this..although really the perfect mix for her would be the one where each song is louder than the next.

Tenacious S said...

Splotchy, I'm on board. Fast and loud is my middle name. Uh, well, maybe not, but I'm happy to participate. Thanks!

Barbara, you can go ahead and join up if you like.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Yay! The cool kids invited me too. I'm in.

Here's my list:

1. Saint You - the Constantines
2. Drink to Me Then Babe - AC Newman
3. Chorus of Wolves - Wood Pigeon
4. Belgium or Peru - Cuff the Duke
5. Speak Slow - Teagan and Sara
6. Private Idaho - the B-52's
7. Cheer It On - Tokyo Police Club
8. Suspect Device - Stiff Little Fingers

Do you like how I managed to sneak 6 Canadian bands in there?

Timothy Donavan Russell said...

What I came up with:

1. Radiohead - A Reminder
2. Cocteau Twins - Multifoiled [remastered version]
3. My Bloody Valentine - Emptiness Inside
4. Yo La Tengo - One PM Again
5. Pixies - Planet of Sound
6. The Police - Deathwish
7. The Cure - Why Can't I Be You?
8. Beastie Boys - Nervous Assistant

It would be cool to do an alternate mix whereby all the #1 songs are together, all the #2 songs are together, etc. That way, you could have one long mix that gradually speeds up. Just an idea.

beckeye, I have all your songs except the Bottle Rockets one. I may have to ask you for it. Is that Ryan Adams a leftover from the Halloween mix :)?

mr yen, my favorite Elvis song *and* the Ace of Spaces? I'm in mixtape heaven. I was cackling when I heard that Dead Kennedys song. You might win the fastest song award.

barbara, damn your Canadian ways! I've only heard the B-52's song (a lovely choice!), looking forward to hearing the others.

tim, wondahfuh choices! I don't think I've heard that Beastie Boys song. That's a groovy idea about having an alternate mix. How's about when I present the mix I also upload a m3u playlist file that orders it the way you suggested?

Timothy Donavan Russell said...

splotch, regarding the m3u playlist idea: great!

I can get you that Bottle Rockets tune, possibly tonight but maybe not until the weekend. Seems I have my music collection spread throughout the land, and I only have that song on my sister's computer in Pittsburgh. I'm going there this weekend, so I can definitely get it by then. But, I'll try to have my tech-not sister send it to me before then.

Hmm...it's not even the one I thought you'd have trouble finding!

Yes, Ryan is left over from the Halloween mix because I'm so sad that I forgot about him. It's not a particularly scary song though, so it probably wouldn't have fit in.

Timothy Donavan Russell said...

Please swap my #1 and #2. Yes, I timed the BPM of each and found the Cocteau Twins one to actually be the slower. I love Radiohead and their odd time signatures.

Splotchy said...

Ack, I am redoing my list a little.

Dropping the Pere Ubu and Belle & Sebastian, adding The Wedding Present and Hüsker Dü.

01 - Antony and the Johnsons - Divine
02 - U.S. Maple - Open A Rose
03 - James Brown - It's A New Day
04 - The Feelies - The High Road
05 - The Wedding Present - It's A Gas
06 - The Ramones - Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment
07 - Hüsker Dü - Divide And Conquer
08 - The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms
